THE VENUE
SANTUARIO DE MONTI-SION
HISTORY
We are so grateful to be able to celebrate with all of you in a very special place with a rich Mallorquin history. Between the mountains of Randa and Sant Salvador, within the municipality of Porreres, is the Monti-Sion mountain that houses on its summit, at about 250 meters high, the sanctuary of the same name. The first hermitage dedicated to the Virgin of Monti-Sion was built in the 14th century. Later, from the 15th century, the current church, the cloister and the Latin grammar classroom were built where students from Porreres and its surroundings were prepared to access the General Study. Reforms were carried out in the 18th and 19th centuries and on January 14, 1954, almost the entire town of Porreres worked to open, in a single day, the current three-kilometer road that allows access by vehicle to the sanctuary. On each side of the road are the seven crosses built in the 15th century that represent the Seven Sorrows and Seven Joys of Mary, of which five have survived, and the small monuments (18th century) of the Via Crucis route that ends in the sanctuary building.
The access to the enclosure is made by a staircase that ascends to the entrance portal, around the canyon. From this point you can access the cloister formed by semicircular arches and with a cistern located in the center to collect rainwater. The church has a façade with a rose window on which is the bell tower and inside, the four side chapels and the neo-Gothic altarpiece of the presbytery stand out, presided over by the marble image of the Virgin of Monti-sion. The image of the virgin shows on its foot the coat of arms of the Duzay family that paid for it at the end of the 15th century or at the beginning of the 16th. Starting in the 1960s, the sanctuary became a community center and the inn was restored and a restaurant serving Majorcan cuisine was opened. Finally, note that the visit to the sanctuary allows you to enjoy sensational panoramic views of Porreres and its surroundings.
